Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)
You will be aware from the media that weight loss injections - Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025
Whilst this is true the criteria to qualify is very strict.
Important Note
We currently cannot prescribe Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for weight management.
A service is due to be launched across Surrey Heartlands in the next couple of weeks. Patients who meet the initial cohort 1 national criteria (there is a phased roll out prioritising individuals with the highest clinical need - commissioning guidance) will be contacted by the practice when the service has started.
Calculations say that there will be 220,000 patients UK wide that will qualify.
Statistically that means from the approximately 32,000 patients registered at ICP only around 90 will qualify and some of those might already be on weight loss in medication.
The qualifying criteria is as follows for cohort 1
- BMI of 40 or more (you need your weight and type to find out your BMI)
If BMI is above 40 then you will also need to have been diagnosed with four of the following five criteria
- Diagnosed hypertension
- Diagnosed sleep apnoea
- Diagnosed type 2 diabetes
- Diagnosed cardiovascular disease
- Diagnosed hypercholesterolemia
